Private label, white label and ODM are thrown around in every sourcing conversation, but they mean different things — and the one you choose changes how much control you have, how fast you can launch, and how much your line costs. Here is a plain-English guide.
In private label production, you bring the design: your tech pack, your measurements, your fabric choices and your brand. The factory manufactures it under your label. You have full control over the style and exclusivity, and you usually need a slightly higher minimum order quantity because the style is built for you from scratch. This is the right choice when you have a clear design identity.
White label means the factory already has a finished, tested design — you simply put your brand on it. There is no development cost or sampling risk; you can launch quickly and at lower volume. The trade-off is that other brands can sell the same style, so it is best for filling out a collection fast rather than building a signature look.
ODM sits between the two. The factory designs the styles — from trend research to pattern and sample — and you select the ones you like, often customising fabric, colour and trims before branding them as your own. You get a semi-exclusive or exclusive design with far less development work than pure private label. For emerging brands without an in-house design team, ODM is often the smartest starting point.
If you have a clear design and want full control, start with private label. If you need product on the shelf fast, add white label styles. If you want a differentiated collection without building a design team, ODM is the sweet spot — many of our clients pick styles from our new collection and customise them for their market.
