Ask any experienced garment maker what decides the success of a style and most will say the same thing: fabric. Fabric controls the drape, the feel, the price and even how well the style sells. Here is a practical way to choose fabric for a women's wear collection, whether you are designing dresses, tops or sets.
Different shapes need different fabrics. Flowy, floaty silhouettes suit lightweight woven fabrics like chiffon, georgette or silk. Structured shapes — blazers, tailored dresses — need body and hold, so look at crepe, twill or ponte. Tops and tees work best in knits that stretch and recover, such as cotton jersey or viscose blends. If you are not sure, ask the factory what it would recommend for your sketch: our sample room does this every day for styles in our dress and tops ranges.
Seasonality is about weight and breathability as much as appearance. Lightweight fabrics around 80–120 gsm suit spring and summer; heavier wovens and knits above 200 gsm carry autumn and winter. A versatile collection includes both, so buyers can plan across seasons.
Retailers and consumers increasingly ask three questions: does it wrinkle, does it shrink, does the colour run? Natural fibres like linen wrinkle more; blends with polyester or elastane hold shape better. Ask for shrinkage and colour-fastness expectations before production, and specify the care label you want. A responsible factory will test and be honest about performance.
In-stock fabrics from the factory's library are faster and cheaper, with no minimum fabric order. Custom fabric development — your own colour, print or composition — is more flexible but slower and usually needs larger quantities. For your first order, we often suggest starting with in-stock or semi-custom options to validate the market, then upgrading fabric on reorders.
